Opening Credits Analysis - Deadpool

Opening Credits Analysis - Dead pool

This is the first shot we see in the opening to Deadpool. It is showing the ident for the production company. This has been shown first to inform the audience as to who produced and helped with funding, casting, etc for this film.

This is the second shot to be shown on the Deadpool opening credits.
This shows the audience who produced the film and tells us it is based off of a comic.

In the next shot we can see a close up of man who looks as if he's screaming. We can also see 'twentieth century fox presents' on here slightly to the left. The font is in all caps, white and bold. This has been done to make it stand out so people aren't just looking at the man screaming. We can just about see the man's forehead has been burnt by a cigarette lighter in the car.

In this next scene we can see a close up of a hand holding a gun in a car, with the glass smashed. This screams action thriller as a sub-genre with props of guns and car crashes. The font is the same as the previous shot, white and bold to stand out from the busy background. We can see some comedy being used straight away in the titles by saying ' some douche's films'. This suggests it has a lot of comedy in to make the audience laugh, also hinting at its genre.

Production Company

Production Company

What is a production company and it's role?
A production company's main role is to help create a film by giving financial support, helping with scheduling, scripting, casting, and more. They help see the film through, from an idea to a final piece.
The production company however are also in control of anything that goes wrong, like property being damaged or actors being hurt.

What is an ident?
Annotate an example of an indent (cover - use of graphics, images, design and layout; text and typography)

An ident is a logo that is shown before a film or TV show has started. By having it shown at the start of the film or TV show it informs the audience who the production company is and who aided in the creation of the film. This also helps to promote themselves and enhance their importance, being the first thing shown.
What makes an effective production company indent?
In order for the ident to be effective it would need to link with the genres of films they typically produce. They'd also need to take into consideration the age range in which the films are aimedoing the. This would help with deciding the colours used, the font, the location, time and main piece. If the film's are typically created for a younger audience, the ident would be expected to have more brighter and eye catching colours than a films created for 18+.
For an example I am looking at the Walt Disney ident. A castle has been used to link with the types of films it produces, fantasty and animation. Walt Disney make films aimed for younger kids and so has shown that in their idents. Using the castle suggests princes and princesses; the font being done in bubble writing also suggests a childish aspect to it.

Ident Examples:
Warner Bros. Pictures

Walt Disney Pictures
20th Century Fox

Universal

Paramount

My chosen production company is Warner Bros. Studios. This company specialises in the genre thriller, having done movies like Harry Potter and Dark knight. Warner Bros. studio is based in the USA and UK with it's sucessful Harry Potter studios in London too.

Subsidiaries:
- Warner Bro's. Interactive entertainment
- Warner Bros. Television
- Warner Bros. Animation
- Warner home video
- New line cinema
- Castle rock entertainment
- DC entertainment
- DC Films

Opening Titles Analysis

Dexter

Dexter is an American TV show set in Miami. The show is based off of the main character ‘Dexter’, a socially awkward man who works for the CIA as a forensic scientist specialised in blood splatter. His leisure time however is spent tracking down murderers and Killing them for himself. The opening to each episode shows Dexter's daily routine yet in a way that links ordinary things to Dexter's ‘secret lifestyle’.

The first shot for the opening of Dexter, the titles show are the producers and the word presents. It has been written in a bold font with only the producer's name in capitals to make it stand out and be easy to see. The white colour used for the text contrasts with the plain black background, also helping it to stand out. At this point there is no music playing, this makes the audience more aware of the title and is importance.

In the second shot of the opening scene, we can see Dexter hit a mosquito, leaving it’s blood on his arm; no titles have been shown. This is an extreme close up with his face blurred putting the main focus on the mosquito and his arm. The death of the bug links to the narrative of the TV show, telling us he isn't afraid to kill and maybe kills people often like they're pests. Diegetic sound has been used when slapping the mosquito to create realism, it wouldn't have been so effective without that sound.
In the next scene we are shown the title of the TV show ‘Dexter’. The font is very clear being shown in capitals and filling nearly the whole screen. The word has been made to look like blood with its dark red colour and drops of it. This links to the genre being a thriller and suggests in the TV show there is going to be a murder. The darker colours of red move throughout the lighter colour in the letters to recreate the movement of blood. The background is a brown colour which almost looks like old, stained paper.

In this next shot we can hear Dexter shaving using dietetic sound. Once again an extreme close up is used in bird's eye view. With the sound and the close-up being used together, it causes the audience to almost feel uncomfortable. This is effective and relates to the narratives of Dexter being a murder than is at times uncomfortable to be around. Once again no titles are used and there are only two props being used, the tissue and the razor. During shaving Dexter cuts himself and drops of blood falls into the sink. This is symbolic of Dexter’s ritual before he kills people. He cuts them and puts a drop of the victim's blood in between two glass plates.
The rule of thirds has been used here for the sinks drain being placed towards the left of the shot, and the blood splatters are in the middle right of the screen. This is effective as it shows us the blood yet also tells us it's in the sink, thus informing the audience.

This shot is an extreme close up of the tissue Dexter used to stop the bleeding when he was shaving in the previous shot. This scene switches from slow motion to normal speed, changing how quick the blood spreads out in the tissue. Once again the opening titles have showed blood as part of everyday life linking with the narrative of Dexter, killing as part of his life.
Here we see a close up shot of Dexter cutting into some meat. At first he cuts it from the packaging which gives it the appearance of a body bag, symbolising death. Then he continues to cut the meat when out of the bag. These two shots signify the narratives and sub genre. This action implies that Dexter kills people like meat, like their nothing. This also links with the second shot where Dexter kills the bug like it's nothing.

We now get an extreme close up of Dexter eating the meat he just cut and cooked. We can hear him biting into the meat and chewing. The close up and dietetic sound has been used to make the audience feel uncomfortable. This can suggest, although he's not, that he's a cannibal to someone who's never watched the show before.

When Dexter is eating his food, the tomato ketchup have been splattered on the plate to look once again make it look like or symbolise blood. Being mixed with the food it also suggests like the previous shot that's he's a cannibal. This links with Dexter’s day time job as a forensic scientist who specialises in blood splatter.

This shot is a close up of a orange being cut with a knife. The juice from the orange is like blood splatter once again linking with Dexter’s life. The background is also red which represents death and symbolises blood. The orange also looks a bit like human skin and the inside shows it isn’t a normal orange. It has a blood red colour which we can see in the next shot, this represents a person and how when you cut them, they bleed. The prop of a knife tells us that it is one of the weapons that Dexter uses to kill. All these previous shots have been purposely made to look like blood or certain methods of killing, like cutting or stabbing. This all symbolises the darker part of Dexter’s life by using a normal morning routine.

These two shots are extreme close ups of Dexter tying both props rope and floss around his hands and fingers. You can see he is using a lot of force to do these everyday actions. This symbolises Dexter choking his victims to make them pass out or to kill them. The first things seen in both these shots are the rope and floss wrapped around his hands, the camera then switches to get a better view of what he’s doing and it is then we can see he is tying his shoes/ flossing his teeth. The camera angle of the shoelaces around his hands is at birds eye view, we can therefore see both his fists balled up like he is fighting which can also symbolise his killer personality.

In this scene we can see a extreme close up of Dexter putting his shirt on. He has purposely put his shirt on this way to represent suffocating. By doing this it suggests this is a method in which he kills people with. We can see in the next shot when he actually takes his head out of the shirt, he gasps. This helps with the choking symbolisation. Overall the amount of blood used in this opening scene links with the TV Show. It symbolises his job as a forensic scientist that specialises in blood splatter and it also relates to his secret lifestyle of killing people who have done wrong. The music being played the whole way through is a soundtrack with bits of dietetic noises being played over the top. For example Dexter hitting the mosquito, him shaving and cooking food. Throughout the whole opening extreme close ups have been used to try make the audience feel uncomfortable with him last, perhaps suggesting he's dangerous. The only two titles that have been used are the producers and the title. With all the everyday items and foods that look like blood in his daily routine, it suggests Dexter puts on a act to hide his true self.

Preliminary Review

Preliminary Evaluation

Preliminary Evaluation
1) For my preliminary task me and my group were asked to make a short video of someone opening a door, walking across the room, sitting down and speaking to another person sitting in the room. We used Cameron as the person walking into the room and Ollie as the other person he speaks to. Although our video is only 1 minute long, it still took  a while to film as we had to get a lot of shots and make sure all of them flowed when editing. Our video started off with Cameron walking down the corridor, opening the door into the room and shaking Ollies hand. This alone took 9 shots in the 12 seconds it happened in. We made sure there were a wide variety of shots by using different types like  panning, tracking, close up, mid and others. We also had dialogue put in to add interest and also to use shot reverse shot when they speak, this was one of the shots required.
2) I think the final result of our film went really well. We used a large variety of shots and managed to make them all flow perfectly with no jumpy scenes. Editing however did prove a challenge as none of our group had actually used imovie before and weren't familiar  with the mac’s controls. However with some help from the teacher and other students we quickly learnt how to edit, making each shot flow and our final video a success.

3) Looking back over our video I'd say the shots we used looked amazing and worked really well once they were all put together. We used a wide range of shots allowing us to have a lot of options when we were editing as to which ones looked best and went well with others. We thought well about our composition sticking well to the rule of thirds, especially when Cameron and Ollie spoke to each other and shot reverse shot was used. We used typical lighting for this whole video using nothing but the lights in the room and corridor. This worked well as the light wasn't too harsh and looked like normal light which is what we wanted.

In this scene we used a slight over the shoulder, mid shot. We have done this to show both Cameron and Ollie are having a conversation. You can see Cameron is slightly to the left and not in the middle, we’ve filmed it like this to used the rule of thirds.

As you can see we did this multiple times, switching sides to use shot reverse shot and to show they’re still talking to each other.

4)To begin with we found it very hard to edit as none of had have had experience with  imovie or even knew how to work a mac. So when it came to editing we struggled and had to get help from the teacher and other classmates. However it was quick to get a grasp of once we got used to it. From doing this task and editing using imovie I have learn how to crop the video in order to get rid of  Ollie smiling in a useful clip that we needed.  Instead of letting the clip go to waste, my friend Georgia taught me how to crop the scene allowing me to get a more close up version of the same clip.
5)We took into account that we had to use certain types of shots like match on action, shot reverse shot, 180 degree rule and kept the video flowing. When editing we make sure that the next shot linked to the previous one, making sure Cameron or Ollie didn't magically jump from one spot to another. We used shot reverse shot really well when the two were having a conversation.
6)The variety of shots we filmed was a great success and after a while of getting used to the editing software, it became easy to use. How the shots went well with each other was a great success too, it all flowed well.
If we could reshoot however I would definitely add more dialogue to make it more interesting and longer so we could used even more camera shots. I would also apply the rule of 180 degrees better by making sure the two people maintain the same left or right relationship to each other.
7)I have learnt how to actually work the mac and imovie.  I have seen how to change the effect to make it black and white or something different, this can help me in my thriller if I i want to make it set in a later period or if I just want the film to look more gothic.
I have also learnt how to add transitions in between clips. This can help with the type of sub genre our thriller is and help to emphasise it. If it was a supernatural- thriller then I'd use more fading out transitions to go with that genre. The feedback from other students and the teacher has also helped us in what to improve so our thriller is better.
