In this scene we can see a close up shot of a woman with a knife held up in her hand. At this point the curtains of the shower have been pulled back and so a POV shot has also been introduced. POV shots shows what a specific character is seeing and puts the audience inside their head. This allows the audience to see what they see and so feel how they feel.
Her face has been blurred by the water from the shower, keeping her identity a secret.
The lighting also helps hide her identity by having it shining on her back, creating a silhouette that hides her face. This also highlights her hand with the knife, a typical prop for a thriller to have, this helps to emphasise the danger for this scene.
Hiding the identity of the killer makes it a mystery, so keeps the tension and prevents the audience from trusting anyone in the film.
The sound of the shower curtains being pulled is dietetic. This continues right up until she is stabbed, where violins start to play. This helps to create suspension due to the silence building until the climax, this makes the audience sit on edge of their seats knowing something bad is going to happen.
In this clip we can see an extreme close up of the victim's mouth. Extreme close ups help to inform the audience of the characters reactions or emotions. In this case we can see she is screaming in fear.
The shot starts off with a close up of the victim's face and then quickly pans into an extreme close up of her mouth when she screams.
We can see in this shot she isn't wearing any clothes, informing the audience she is in the shower.
This shot is shown multiple times, quickly switching from the stabbing in the shower back to the rain clouds. The black in the clouds can represent mystery and death, whereas the grey can be associated with loss. These clouds have been put here to show the audience what is happening in the scene through representation of the colours.
Another technique used is pathetic fallacy. Pathetic fallacy can show the mood of a scene or character through the weather, for example in this shot dark rain clouds are used. This can suggest doom and disaster or even an ending to something.
This shot is a close up of the victim's face pressed against the floor dead with her eyes looking straight into the camera. The camera movement imitates the water and blood moving down the drain in the previous shot, circling around the eye. The camera then pans out so we can see a close up of her face.
The victim looking straight into the camera shows her piercing eyes with no emotion. This dead emotion represents her life gone.
This shot is a point of view of the victim. Pov shots allow the audience to get inside the character's mind, letting them see and feel how they do. You can see the murderer walking away in the background with the water from the shower in the foreground, the camera however is focused on the water. Once again the identity of the killer has been hidden to keep tension and mystery for the rest of the film. The killers back has been turned away from the camera to show them leaving the scene, the camera is also focused on the water in the foreground to make the killer blurry. This not only prevents the audience from seeing the killer's face but also shows them that the victim is not well and her vision is blurring, especially from being a pov shot.
